I started Liza Phillips Design in 2004 after I had moved to upstate New York and wanted a rug for my house. I had wandered into a Tibetan store in Greenwich Village and the owner invited me to design my own rug which his brother in Kathmandu would weave for me. The rug was a success and soon I was designing other rugs for the store.

Meanwhile I built my first website and started running my business out of my barn. In 2006 I came up with the idea of ALTO STEPS, which are modular stair tread rugs often with different colors and patterns alternating from step to step. I worked with Architects and designers as well as individuals to produce hundreds of rugs every year.

In 2025 I decided after more than 20 years to close the business and focus on painting and other creative pursuits. I am still producing some pieces for my own collection.

Below are some examples of my designs.
